The Bethesda Lions kicked off district play in dramatic fashion last night, earning a hard-fought 2-1 overtime victory against reigning district champions, Victory Baptist.
The Lions struck first when junior Izzy Harrington calmly converted a penalty kick, giving Bethesda an early 1-0 advantage. Victory Baptist responded with a goal of their own, leveling the score at 1-1, where it remained through regulation thanks in part to a gritty defensive stand and standout goalkeeping from junior Matthew Benson.
In overtime, the Lions sealed the win with a clutch goal from senior Iyanu Akinremi, who found the back of the net off a sharp assist from fellow senior Jacob Helge.
With the win, the Lions improve to 1-0 in district play and 4-2 overall on the season. They'll hit the road for a non-district matchup against Alliance Christian this Thursday.
Come out and support the team — it's shaping up to be an exciting season!
